Description
Our firm 100% Sri Lankan natural rubber (no fillers, no toluene like the Indian rubber, and no ash). See our rubber story. We take a 4.5" rubber core and wrap it in our unique quilted outer to create a 5.5-6" mattress. The higher the mattress, the less safe it is as your baby grows. We quilt together a layer of organic cotton fabric, organic batting, organically processed wool from organically raised sheep, and our attractive European organic cotton Pure-Rest fabric. By quilting all this together we can use more topping materials to give you longevity and provide a uniform supportive sleeping surface. Our mattresses all exceed the highest California flame retardancy standards set into place in January 2005. Shipping additional $35 Our standard natural rubber crib mattress is the required 5-6" thick and meet all safety requirements set forth by the CPSC. Features an inner wool layer quilted to the organic cotton outer for natural flame retardancy to meet federal guidelines. Inside is a 4" natural rubber core. The rubber is firm and supportive and all natural with no chemical additives. Our organic cotton is long staple and hand - picked (no vegetation). Our pure wool is sheared off healthy, happy organically raised sheep. These high quality materials are what set our mattresses apart from the less quality mattresses made from inferior U.S. cottons and wools. We will not accept any chemically tainted rubber. We will not accept petroleum tainted Talalay. It is simple, our mattresses are simply NATURAL and Toxin Free Our manufacturing facility is the only company I know of that does testing and makes sure the products are as pure as can be. If you are unsure about a company's product just ask them if they have had it tested. The Pure-Rest Mattress No Bonding Agents (these are used by many companies to hold together their wool and/or cotton batting inside the quilting. This can be a chemical spray or a polyester layer called scrim). No artificial scents (these are used to cover up the natural odors and are petrochemical-like artificial vanillan used in most natural Talalay) No Formaldehyde No Phenols No Pthalates No Toluene No Benzene, No Benzothiazone (present in others mattresses) No silica containing dimethyl sulfate No artificial vanillin containing petroleum No Flamebreaker containing silica (dimethyl sulfate) No Pesticides No PBDE's No Boric Acid No chemical Flame Retardants No Polyethylene No Polyurethane Wool processed organically Natural Rubber-How Do I know how natural it is? There is a lot of confusion on natural rubber products. The biggest confusion is "what does natural rubber mean"? Natural rubber can be used to designate any product that has natural rubber in it. Blends of 60% synthetic are stated as natural rubber (they do contain some natural rubber). Many companies claim they have an ALL Natural Rubber. The only problem is many companies did not test it to verify that it is indeed ALL NATURAL and CHEMICAL-FREE. We did and this is what we found. Our rubber used in our Dunlap process is chemical-free. Only natural vegetable based soaps are used for washing. This was tested by Latexco ( a third party agency) and another test for this year is currently underway. We wanted to make Talalay Latex mattresses for an additional choice but when Latex Internationaltm natural latex was tested by Radium in Belgium it tested with chemicals. The people at Latex International are honest that the latex does use a synthetic sulfur accelerator-benzene derivative and regular soaps for washing. They also stated that they have not yet tested this Talalay for chemicals. This product may appeal to some people but we do not want to manufacture products that are not 100% as natural as can be. There are plenty of synthetic blend mattress companies out there. Here is an email sent to me by the latex manufacturer that sells to a competitor (not sure what your body can tolerate-mine does not tolerate too much of any chemicals): Dear  Ginny Turner,   Received your mail regarding test result.   The benzene and Toluene are within the tolerance limit.   Regards,   George L. Mathew Director The Pure-Growtm Wool Story The Pure Growtm Wool project is a unique program that emphasizes a long-term commitment with  local ranchers to insure pure, clean wool for our products. The "Pure Grow" wool ranchers are asked to follow healthful farming practices such as: 1.  Utilize year round rational grazing and responsible land management. Good nutrition to maximize animal health.   Non-crowded conditions, fresh air, daylight, clean and roomy shelters.               2.   In the shearing process, use a clean room and a surface free of dirt, dust and pests.  Clean shearing produces clean wool. 3.  The wool is removed in a single fleece and placed on the skirting table; there it is inspected for length, strength, dirt and pests.  Care is taken to keep the wool as clean as possible during shearing to eliminate any need for chemical treatments to remove burrs, brands, dirt and other impurities.  Only top quality wool is used in our products. 4.  Shorn wool is immediately separated by color and placed in clean dry sacks. 5.  The wool is taken to a scouring mill where it is soaked in hot water to remove loose matter.  Then it is washed a minimum of two times in hot water with a safe, biodegradable detergent, rinsed in hot water and wrapped into large bales. 6.  The clean wool is then shipped to manufacturing.  Several lots of wool are blended to insure uniform quality and then carded.  The carding process involves mechanically combing the wool fibers into smooth bats. 7.  The shorn wool goes into our products including pillows, comforters, wool pads,  and for comfort as well as a natural fire retardant in our organic cotton and natural rubber mattresses. Wool is a springy, resilient fiber that contains an abundance of air.  This fiber/air combination acts to cushion the body and prevent the formation of annoying and painful pressure points.  Wool has the ability to absorb large amounts of moisture vapor without feeling wet and clammy.   The average person gives of a pint of vapor as perspiration during an eight-hour sleep period under a comforter.  The ability of our wool fiber to handle this moisture is very important.  Wool handles body moisture under warm and cool sleeping conditions in a manner superior to cotton, down, or synthetic fiber. A study conducted by the Ergonomics Unit at the Polytechnic Institute of Whales confirmed that a wool filled comforter is more comfortable that the equivalent  weight and construction of synthetic comforters.  The physiological data showed:  The heart rate under the wool filled comforter was significantly lower 100% of the time.  The humidity next to the skin above 91 degrees, which is considered to be the optimum level for sleep comfort, was significantly higher under synthetic fill comforters 80% of the time. Why is it better than certified organic wool? Organic wool is processed (carded) in a facility where other fibers are processed. We are the only facility which processes are wool from the organically raised sheep in our own facility. The wool is washed, then it is fed into our machine which shreds the wool in order to separate the fibers. It goes into a long tube which carries it to another machine where it is further cleaned and separated. It then magically comes out into neat folds of carded wool. The machine does not process anything but our Pure-Growtm Wool so it does not get contaminants into the wool. I did try some organic wool but found that there were contaminants such as poly fibers in the wool. We know that years ago when the machine we use was purchased and the dye was put through the machine, it took a couple of years before there were none of the dyed fibers, so companies that send theirs out or use their machine for other items do get a good amount of contaminants from the various other items that were processed before. You can ask for a ball of the carded wool from a company and maybe you can see some of the foreign fibers.  That is what I did. There seems to be no way to prevent this. So what we are now looking at is a fine organic wool that meets all the requirements of certified organic wool, is carded without contaminants and could be certified except for the natural dewormer (cattle certified organic) that is used to protect the sheep.         Few batting producers have a multiple-breaker system; more than two is quite rare. Woolgatherer’s three-breaker system works the wool three times, breaking loose more dirt and unwanted material than other mills.  Breaking or “combing” the fibers three times makes loftier wool by loosening more tangles.  This exceptional three-breaker mill, combined with our carefully selected fleeces, allows us to produce one of the highest quality products of its kind in the world. The Guiding Criteria For Eco Wool: Our batting is made from a blend of wool from different sheep breeds selected by Woolgatherer Carding Mill. Our staff visits each woolgrower to assure that our fleeces come from healthy sheep raised on sustainably managed lands.  We pay collaborating woolgrowers a premium for the best fleeces from their flocks.  We then clean and card the fleeces on a full wool card line, which produces the finest known woolen batting available. Proper Grazing Methods: Adequate field rotation to decrease soil erosion and to reduce the risk of sheep acquiring internal parasites. Predator Friendly: We encourage our growers to use trained sheep guardian dogs (not trapping or shooting) and the inclusion of other larger animals, such as llamas, to guard the flock. Healthy Veterinary Practices: Only certain kinds of medications and supplements can be used to treat the sheep.  We suggest alternative caring methods to keep sheep healthy with fewer chemicals. Chemical Control: We oppose the use of herbicides and pesticides on fields that the sheep will be grazing in.  We are able to determine if growers use these chemicals in our routine wool chemical testing. Specifications for Breed, Color, Strength and Micron-Width: The Woolgatherer Carding Mill blend uses wool from six to eight different breeds, depending on availability.  We do not allow black wool and very little canary yellow wool in our Eco Wool blend. Skirting: Skirting is the process of removing less-desirable wool from the belly and back end of the sheep.  This wool is separated on a skirting table and sold to other clients. “WARMING THE WORLD WITH WOOL”  Why Wool is A Superior Fiber The secret of wool lies in the unique structure of its fibers, which draw moisture, insulate against heat and cold, resist flame, and maintain resilience.  Unlike cotton, linen, silk, or polyester, wool fibers are covered with tiny scales, making them look like pinecones in scanning electron micrographs.  This physical structure accounts for many of its beneficial properties. Although its scaly surface repels liquids, the wool fiber’s core is highly absorbent, taking in as much as 30 percent of its weight in moisture.  Synthetics, by contrast, hold as little as 2 percent.  By drawing perspiration away from the body, wool products prevent the skin from feeling clammy during the summer and help hold in heat during winter. Wool’s structure then allows the moisture to quickly evaporate when exposed to air, inhibiting the growth of mildew and discouraging the presence of dust mites.
